We have shifted in our thinking about creativity since the Renaissance. We now talk about a person “being” a genius- and all the good ideas emanating from the self. Before this change which put the individual at the center of things, it was understood that a person “had” a genius. In Ancient Greece & Rome, a “genius” was understood as kind of magical divine entity who comes out and invisibly assists the artist with their work and somehow affects the outcome. Creativity was seen as something outside the self. Nowadays, the pressure of being seen as the source of the creativity distorts and warps the ego of the person and undoes artists… really lovely and inspiring talk.
